This letter is to inform you that we have recently stopped using Proheart 6 in dogs. The drug was effective in preventing heartworms but some concerns about the safety have arisen. I recently had a dog which has had some problems after vaccinations and Proheart were given. I referred the dog to an internal medicine specialist. He felt there was a possibility that Proheart was the cause. Fort Dodge's (the maker) literature indicates this did not happen during their trials. After more personal research about the problem, I found that there have been several suspected but unproven cases of problems after injections of Proheart. After discussion with the internal medicine specialist, I have decided to stop giving the Proheart injection until I'm sure it cannot cause problems. (My own dog has had 4 injections of Proheart without any problems.)

You may start your dog on a monthly preventative tablet at the time he/she is due the Proheart injection without any testing being done.
