"Bear"

1996 - September 14, 2004

Bear was my best friend, he went everywhere we went!

(Father's note: Jackie had Bear from the time she was 5 years old till his death, she was then 13 )

To the makers of Proheart 6: To my knowledge my dad and I took our dog "Bear" and our two other dogs, "Angel" and "Mickey" to the vet as we did every year to get a check up. As my dad and I waited for the vet to call us, we noticed that they had come out with a new heart worm shot. So my dad decided to get educated a little more about it. As he heard somewhat about it, all three of our dogs got the shot on the date of May 9th, 2002.

Not two days after that my brothers dog had a seizure.

Now back to before Bear had his first recorded seizure on 11/13/01. Not long after, my dad stayed up all night with Bear.... watching over and taking care of him because in that night and the morning before Bear had a total of 15 or more seizures.

I woke up the next day to my mom taking me to school and I came out of my room and saw that Bear was having another seizure. It was horrible! I was scared, sad and confused all at once. It hurt me to see him like that and I went to school so disturbed I could hardly focus.

Over a period of time Bear had 3 more shots and a lot more seizures. My family and I helped him through them, but it was really heart breaking.

On the day of September 14, 2004 my dad and I had helped him through a seizure before we had to leave. My dad and I went to a guys house to pick up some furniture and left Bear there at home all alone. After we got all of the furniture loaded we went home.

I got the keys from my dad and unlocked the door to the house. I went inside looking at Bear as I walked by him putting my stuff down. I thought at first my best friend of eight long loving years was just sleeping so I bent down to pet him through the cage and calling his name to try and wake him up. After a little while of trying to wake him up I finally realized that my best friend in the whole wide world was DEAD.

I broke out in tears as I ran outside, hysterical, trying to get out that "Bear was dead!"

As my dad realized what had happened, he ran inside. A couple of seconds later he came out crying. I will never forget what he looked like, his eyes were wide open and teeth bared. It was heart breaking.

I don't think I can ever forget it. Seeing that I was the one that found him there. I will never LOVE another dog like him again. There will never BE another dog like him. He was the sweetest dog you ever did meet and he knew when you were upset. He would always come in my room and whine and sit right by me and comfort me. He was the best dog ever and because of the makers of Proheart 6 I will never see him again, feel his soft fur on my face, hear his bark, nothing!

It took me almost an hour to write this, because I had to stop and just cry for a little while.

Sincerely,
Another victim of Proheart 6
Jackie Stafford

Where do I begin?

Bear was my best friend, he went everywhere we went.
He had traveled to over 15 states during our Soccer Tournaments.
Bear was always allowed into the most expensive hotels.
He went to the coast when we went to the Surfing Nations.
Bear loved the water and just being out in the breeze.
Our lives will never be the same.

My vet should have received the Dear Doctor letter sent in 2002. No dog that had a history of seizures, should have received Proheart 6. After receiving Proheart 6, Bears seizures were very violent, falling over, kicking, biting, then he would become very aggressive.

At first, I just wanted my dog replaced.
The manufacturer denied it.
They stated I couldn't prove this drug killed Bear.
I know in anger I said some things I shouldn't have.

Now I realize,
Bear could never be replaced anyway.

"Candy"

December 21, 1991 - November 24, 2003

You are my sunshine,
My only sunshine
You make me happy when skies are grey
You'll never know dear how much I love you,
Please don't take my sunshine away!

(To Candy, every night for over 11 years)

I got Candy when I was 7. I had been begging my parents for a dog since I was 4. I believe it was embarrassment that finally made them cave! I went around to the neighbors with dog biscuits and asked them if their dogs could come out and play!

Then in 2003, our 11 year old Shih-tzu, Candy was diagnosed with Cushings Disease after her entire life of skin infections. If you're not familiar with Cushings, it's a tumor in the pituitary gland, an endocrine organ that secretes hormones. It is about as lethal as cancer if left untreated. We put Candy on Lysodren, and all was fine, until our vet moved, and we were forced to find another vet.

We had nowhere to turn, and we were limited of funds, so we decided to go to Banfield, the vet at our local Petsmart. We didn't know it at the time, but the veterinary technicians get perks/benefits for certain products they sell.

When it was time for Candy's vaccines, (we do get them every year, our old vet only gave her Rabies due to her age and rabies is required, but not the combo), the vet technicians were pushing us to get the Proheart6 vaccine.

Candy had been on heartgard, and had done beautifully on it, never had a problem. Nevertheless, I was young, and this was before I worked at the vet's office (as a kennel tech) so I didn't know the side affects (or the fact the bottle says don't give to puppies under 6 months and don't give to immune deficient dogs).

Three days after we gave her the vaccines, she started vomiting and having bad diarrhea. She couldn't keep anything down, and she was really thirsty. She stood at the water bowl for about 30 minutes, she could not quench her thirst, and then she'd throw it all up. We called our vet, and she just said to take away her food/water and only give her ice cubes. The next day, she took a turn for the worst. That morning she started seizing, and couldn't walk. It was as if she was paralyzed.

We took her to the animal emergency clinic (it was a Sunday, everything was closed), and they determined she was in liver failure and was severely dehydrated due to a toxin.

That night, she lost control of her bowels and bladder, and we knew it was time to put her to rest, and we humanely euthanized her.
I filed a report with the FDA. I am hoping and praying it will stay off the market. We never got a phone call after her vaccines from our Banfield vet. They didn't call us once
.

I don't want other naive dog owners to make the same mistake I did.
