Information About a Popular Canine Heartworm Preventative Heartgard® Failure – Made by “Merial”

Email on Valuheart:

I would like to report another Heartworm medicine that I believe is toxic.

June 15, 2004
I took my perfectly healthy 7 yr old lab in to have his teeth cleaned. The vet did a complete blood work up first. He was fine. The vet recommended I start him on a heartworm preventative medicine.

July 2nd, 2004
I bought and administered ONE tablet of Valuheart, which I ordered on-line from PetShed.com. The product is called Valuheart Brown (a generic Heartgard Brown alternative).
Each tablet contains 240mg IVERMECTIN.

July 5th, 2004
When my dog woke up, he was acting fidgety and totally erratic for about 1 minute. Then he fell to the floor and had a seizure, which lasted about 2-3 minutes. He was blind for several hours afterward and disoriented for days. He is much better now, but, not 100%.

I talked to a REP at PetShed, who assured me that their product could not have caused the seizure. I talked to my VET, who concurred with PetShed's assessment.

I have no doubt that is what caused my dog's seizure.

Someone needs to look into Valuheart- Lot 46562
