Some of the 'lucky' ones, even with after effects
"Velvet"

Black Velvet's Webpage

Velvet received her six month heartworm injection in March of '03. It was about 10 days later she got sick, vomiting, diaherra, wouldn't eat and sluggish. This went on for almost two weeks, we babied her. Then she started improving. But as she started improving, she started breaking out in hives. Some kind of allergic reaction. She had 5 seizures in 6 months.

Six months later...... she still breaks out due to perservatives in some dog foods and treats. She had another small seizure 8 months post injection. laurrynS@aol.com

"Zeus"
I definitely do not recommend the PH6 shot. I believe that Zeus had a different adverse reaction to this drug than most of the other dogs I read about. I believe Zeus had a reaction that was restricted to where the injection was given (locally) and where the PH6 traveled after injection (down to his chest and right front leg). Zeus was on an antibiotic at the time for lyme disease prevention and that this could be a possible reaction of the two drugs. Also, I would like to state that after 15 or so phone calls, the Fort Dodge people successfully avoided payment on any of Zeus' care. .

"Kaycee" and "Honey"

I am tired of worrying

that I may lose Kaycee and/or Honey,

the way I lost my dear Hunter

to that ProHeart 6 shot.

Sandra Slayton

Kaycee on top lost her littermate Hunter to PH6. She has had to have both knees operated on. Despite all of that she is just so sweet and loving, we are just keeping our fingers crossed till her six months is up in February '04.

Honey, is a Golden that we adopted December 2002 and was thought to be a year old at the time. A month after we got her we found she had heart worms and she had to go thru that awful treatment and weeks of being caged.

Then Honey was cleared, determined to be in great health and is as active as she can be. HOWEVER we are waiting out 4 months til her second AND LAST ProHeart 6 shot
wears off.

"Casey"

Casey lost his playmates
Tasha and Niki to Proheart 6.
Casey's on two different thyroid medications,
one to keep it from getting worse,
and one to boost it. He had the shot on June 17, 2002,
so it's has been a year since he's been off the shot.
By all outward appearances,
he seems to be just fine. However,
for such a young dog (three years old),
after long walks, it seems to take him
a day or two for him to recover.

"Mia"

Mia is a 7 year old cocker spaniel.

She is my angel and my constant companion.

I have had her since she was 5-6 weeks old
and she has been very healthy and active.

I have had Mia on heartworm prevention
pills for years without problems.

It was this year that my vet began to promote Proheart as a better way of heartworm prevention. Mia recieved 2 injections six months apart and 3 months after the second injection she became gravely ill with what my vet referred to as "auto-immune hemolytic anemia". She was weak, had trouble breathing, her gums and eyes were pale and jaundiced. She had blood in her urine and stool and had a hematocrit of 10. I questioned my vet on day one if it could be the Proheart and my vet didn't think so. She endured multiple tests and blood transfusions and a week later she was well enough to come home on multiple medicines. The vet was puzzled that her coombs test came back negative so he didn't know why she became so ill. I began to research Proheart on the internet and I believe now that Proheart almost killed my dog as it has many others. My Mia just happened to be lucky enough to survive. I will never use Proheart again on my pets and I encourage others to not use it also. I am thankful that I know now how to prevent this from happening to her again. I would never get over her death if it was because of an injection I made her get. Today she is happy and healthy and Proheart free!
