| Many monthly heartworm preventatives also protect against
roundworms and hookworms, which dogs can pass on to people.
"Using a preventive that controls these parasites
is a public health issue," according to Dr. Peter
Schantz, Epidemiologist, Division of Parasitic Disease
for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Atlanta,
GA. |
South Paws neurologist Dr. Betsy Dayrell-Hart says
there's no way to determine whether ProHeart 6 caused
the seizures.
Dr. Juan Valar of McLean Animal Hospital says they
don't carry ProHeart 6 anymore -mainly because his clients
didn't want it. But he says any kind of medication can
have side effects.
|
| Experts say the concern is that the medication is a
highly concentrated, microencapsulated drug that must
be mixed in suspension for time release inside the animal's
body.
"[It] needs to be administered properly. It needs
to be prepared properly," said Dr. Bert Childers,
a veterinarian with the Society for the Prevention of
Cruelty to Animals.
Childers has used ProHeart 6 in the past without trouble,
and still considers it safe. But his SPCA clinic does
not dispense it, in favor of monthly treatment.
"You can stop, and you don't have another 4 months
left in the body that you have to contend with,"
he said.
TX |
| Gordon suggests pet owners do their own research and
talk with their vet. For those still concerned, he recommends
using a heartworm preventative that has worked for your
dog. He says either way, use a preventative, because heartworms
are deadly
NC |
| But Proheart 6 isn't worth the risk here. Dr. Karyl
Ropko says she'll stick to drugs like Heartguard and Interceptor
that also prevent other worms.
"We always want to use medications that have the
least amount of side effects that will do the job we
need to in the safest manner," says Ropko.
