"Moses"

September 2, 1990 - August 25, 1994

"Moe" was my first giant dog.

He was also my first to die from a so called "miracle drug"

I got my Moe Moe when he was just six weeks old, I had heard at the vets
that this woman had a Saint who had been bred with a Newfy, and she was
looking for puppy people. Well I called her as soon as I got home, and
told her that I wanted a puppy, and wanted to know the price. Roberta told
me that these pups were free, she just was looking for good homes.
My husband and I went back when they were just days old, and I picked out Moe.

I fell in love that day with the giant breeds, he was the most beautiful puppy I
had ever seen. That was the longest six weeks of my life, I spent more time driving back
and forth between her house and mine, than I did anything else. I lived for
that puppy, I had been off work for about 9 months after being attacked by a
patient at work, who literally torn my arm out of the socket, I was very
depressed, in a lot of pain and was waiting for two shoulder surgeries. I
was only able to get through all this because of Moe, he literally made me
want to live, after the shoulder surgeries, I was in agonizing pain,
because of him I wanted to get up in the morning, I wanted to get better.

I finally got to bring Moe home, after giving the whole litter their first
puppy shots. I was in love, I started taking him to obedience classes at a
wonderful school. The first session went fine, and I went back for another,
well in that second class was a woman named Anne, who owns Anne's Animal
Actors, she asked if she could take some pictures of Moe and I said sure.
I figured that was the end of that, well, to my surprise, Anne called me
on the phone and asked if I would like to use him in movies, tv ads, and
television, well, blow me over, I was thrilled! After that, she called to
use him several times, in Northern Exposure, Twin Peaks, the movie, and
several tv ads, one for the Ford company, he was in a van with a large Asian
family of about 6 people, they all got out of this SUV, and then at the end,
here comes Big Moe, what fun that was.

We had a great time doing these things together, all the directors liked
Moe because they had never seen a dog that big who was so gentle and sweet.
As he got older he started getting a little arthritis, so the vet put him
on prednisone, off and on, a tapering dose, which worked well for him. Then
one day he told me that there was this "miracle drug" called Adequan, that
had no side effects, was not yet approved by the FDA, but he was approved to
do trials for this drug. This sounded great to me, it was a monthly shot. He
did give me paperwork to sign. But in this paperwork, NO WHERE did it say that
this could be lethal, so I signed the papers with all the love in my heart.

Moe got ONE shot, and was dead 24 hours later at the ER clinic.
I thought my husband and I would die, here was this beautiful 4 year old
dog who was now dead, from something supposedly harmless, The ER vet was also very upset, so was the tech, it was her first day there, everyone was crying as hard as we were.

I felt so guilty, this was my fault, I read the paperwork, I signed
the papers, THIS WAS MY FAULT. I gave the ER vet my permission to do a
necropsy, and we went home. She called me a while later with the results of her examination, this drug had caused him to develop DIC, it totally destroyed his liver, he bled out
in less than 24 hours, that was the result from the pathologist.

And then about 4 years later, I guess I had not learned my lesson, because
I gave my puppy "Honor," Rimadyl.... he died also.

I did contact the vet by letter, and he sent me a check for $700, which
was the price of a replacement puppy, but not the same as my Moe Moe.
As an aside, I was called the day after he died and told that he had been
approved for his own series, to be shot in BC, I had to tell Annie that he
was gone, way too soon.

You all would have loved to have seen him.....

Moe was my best friend, my life saver, my heart.

"Tasha"

May 27, 1990 - July 6, 2003

"If tears could build a stairway and memories a lane, I'd walk right up to Heaven and bring you home again!"

Royalair's Lady Tasha was born on May 27, 1990 and was put to sleep on July 6, 2003.

Tasha had surgery for removal of a 'fatty tumor' on Feb. 4, 2002. She had always had excellent health and our vet was Dr. Barb Rush of Johnston, IA. Following her surgery she was sent home with 2 medications.... Cephalexin and Rimadyl. I, like all the others was never told of any side effects concerning Rimadyl. I had never heard of the drug. It was dispensed in Dr. Rush's own prescription bottle with just the name and dosage. I was told that Tasha needed to be on the drug for inflammation around the surgical site.

On February 11, after having her staples removed that evening she started vomiting, drinking huge quantities of water and had lost all bladder control. I called the vet the next morning and was told that she was in Renal Failure and that there was nothing that we could do.

To make a long 16 month story short, after finding the Sr. Dog Project website and reading about Rimadyl, I called the vet immediately and she was not home. I called the local Animal Emergency Clinic to verify the symptoms of Rimadyl. I was told I could only get that information from the prescribing vet. I called Iowa State University Animal Emergency Clinic and was told to bring Tasha in immediately, which we did. She was tested for every kidney function test known to man along with ultrasounds etc.

In three days Tasha came home drinking and eating normally!

She was placed on Denosyl SD4 because her SGPT was elevated and Pronin for the loss of bladder control. On March 6, 2002, Tasha began licking her incision and when we rolled her over we found a staple that had been left in her, along with part of the drainage tube that had not been removed and puss was pouring out of her. Her incision was abscessed.

After 20 days of medication we ended up back at Iowa State where they had to take her back to surgery and clean out the wound. She then healed up nicely, but by December 2002 she started licking her vulva area which had become abscessed...... and the story goes on and on and on.

Talk about a BAD VET EXPERIENCE! My Tasha died because of her negligence.
