"Moe"
was my first giant dog.
He
was also my first to die from a so called
"miracle drug"
|
I
got my Moe Moe when he was just six weeks old, I had
heard at the vets
that this woman had a Saint who had been bred with
a Newfy, and she was
looking for puppy people. Well I called her as soon
as I got home, and
told her that I wanted a puppy, and wanted to know
the price. Roberta told
me that these pups were free, she just was looking
for good homes.
My husband and I went back when they were just days
old, and I picked out Moe.
I
fell in love that day with the giant breeds, he was
the most beautiful puppy I
had ever seen. That was the longest six weeks of my
life, I spent more time driving back
and forth between her house and mine, than I did anything
else. I lived for
that puppy, I had been off work for about 9 months
after being attacked by a
patient at work, who literally torn my arm out of
the socket, I was very
depressed, in a lot of pain and was waiting for two
shoulder surgeries. I
was only able to get through all this because of Moe,
he literally made me
want to live, after the shoulder surgeries, I was
in agonizing pain,
because of him I wanted to get up in the morning,
I wanted to get better.
I finally got to bring Moe home, after giving the
whole litter their first
puppy shots. I was in love, I started taking him to
obedience classes at a
wonderful school. The first session went fine, and
I went back for another,
well in that second class was a woman named Anne,
who owns Anne's Animal
Actors, she asked if she could take some pictures
of Moe and I said sure.
I figured that was the end of that, well, to my surprise,
Anne called me
on the phone and asked if I would like to use him
in movies, tv ads, and
television, well, blow me over, I was thrilled! After
that, she called to
use him several times, in Northern Exposure, Twin
Peaks, the movie, and
several tv ads, one for the Ford company, he was in
a van with a large Asian
family of about 6 people, they all got out of this
SUV, and then at the end,
here comes Big Moe, what fun that was.
We had a great time doing these things together, all
the directors liked
Moe because they had never seen a dog that big who
was so gentle and sweet.
As he got older he started getting a little arthritis,
so the vet put him
on prednisone, off and on, a tapering dose, which worked
well for him. Then
one day he told me that there was this "miracle
drug" called Adequan, that
had no side effects, was not yet approved by the FDA,
but he was approved to
do trials for this drug. This sounded great to me,
it was a monthly shot. He
did give me paperwork to sign. But in this paperwork,
NO WHERE did it say that
this could be lethal, so I signed the papers with
all the love in my heart.
Moe
got ONE shot, and was dead 24 hours later at the ER
clinic.
I thought my husband and I would die, here was this
beautiful 4 year old
dog who was now dead, from something supposedly harmless,
The ER vet was also very upset, so was the tech, it
was her first day there, everyone was crying as hard
as we were.
I felt so guilty, this was my fault, I read the paperwork,
I signed
the papers, THIS WAS MY FAULT. I gave the ER vet my
permission to do a
necropsy, and we went home. She called me a while
later with the results of her examination, this drug
had caused him to develop DIC, it totally destroyed
his liver, he bled out
in less than 24 hours, that was the result from the
pathologist.
And then about 4 years later, I guess I had not learned
my lesson, because
I gave my puppy "Honor," Rimadyl.... he
died also.
I did contact the vet by letter, and he sent me a
check for $700, which
was the price of a replacement puppy, but not the
same as my Moe Moe.
As an aside, I was called the day after he died and
told that he had been
approved for his own series, to be shot in BC, I had
to tell Annie that he
was gone, way too soon.
You
all would have loved to have seen him.....
Moe
was my best friend, my life saver, my heart.
