School has started and Fall is in the air! Next month we set our clocks back and then it's Halloween!

Finally ...something for those that say "It's Just a Dog"

This month 'In Memory of' is "Hunter" and "Bandit" -- Both moxidectin victims, both passing the same day, both greatly loved and missed! (even today)

***** The FDA/CVM has an updated NSAID page just released with current labels and CIS. It also includes a generic 'carprofen'. Some of this information has been difficult to find previously.

**** Rabies Challenge Fund is moving ahead! Check out the Breed Clubs that have donated! Rabies had previously been tested for one or three year duration. This study will be for SEVEN years! Let's help make this happen!

**** A while back there was an odd offer of $20,000 for "drinking of the vaccine additives mixture." This has recently been raised to $75,000.00! Although, not just any one is elgible, read more.

**** Dog Food - - Subject that interests all of us. K-9 Kraving claims to be USDA inspected yet according to this FDA Newsletter , a warning letter has been issued "FDA advised this producer of animal food that it must cease marketing K-9 Kraving Dog Food and file a NADA, or remove the therapeutic claims from the product brochures. Furthermore, the food manufacturing facility needs to register with FDA."

**** We've heard in the past about "Thimerosal" but do we really know what it is? "Thimerosal is a water-soluble, cream-colored crystalline powder, and is known to be 49.6% mercury by weight. In the human body, thimerosal is metabolized to ethyl mercury and thiosalicylate, and while the literature on Thimerosal metabolism and excretion is limited and old, case reports have demonstrated toxicity after massive overdoses." World Wide Thimerosal Warning. The Homeland Secuirty Bill included a provision " that blocks lawsuits against the maker of a controversial vaccine preservative called "thimerosal," used in vaccines that are given to children." then we have "Vaccination - The Hidden Truth" (Ed note: Yes, this may pertain to humans, but if it happens to 'people' you can't help but wonder, what about our companions?)

**** In the last edition, it was mentioned that a special article was being written for DogsAdverseReactions and for those who have lost their companion. "Grieving the Ungrievable" Many thanks to Sheryl for 'understanding.'

**** It was also stated there would be more on microchips. Please read about Léon and be informed. There is a lot of documentation included in his Memorial. If that isn't enough, please refer to DogPolitics, then make a choice.

**** "Anaphylaxis" Anyone who has watched their companion have an adverse reaction has probably heard this word. We know it goes with "allergic reaction" but do we know the rest? Websters definition is "hypersensitivity (as to foreign proteins or drugs) resulting from sensitization following prior contact with the causative agent." I didn't really understand until I read in Readers Digest. "Anaphylaxis is a sudden, severe and potentially fatal allergic reaction that can involve the skin, respiratory tract, gastrointestinal tract and cardiovascular system. The only sure treatment is strict avoidance of known allergens." (emphasis added) Strict advoidance? yet if our dog has a reactions to a shot, they just want to "pre-treat" before the next one?

**** Awareness Day 2006! THIS Sat.-Sept 16th in Lancaster, PA. For three years DogsAdverseReactions has been invited to attend. This year we are! Demitry Herman and myself will have information to pass out. Although Awareness Day is for Puppy mills, we want to see if we can raise the awareness of possible adverse reactions also. If anyone else would like to join us, please let us know! or if you just want to come meet us, there is a Candlelight Service on Friday night and a walk on Saturday. Dogs are welcome too! Many thanks to those who have helped. Pictures will be posted.

**** "Snickers" Update! After a set back last month, she is doing well! Collar is off and she is running and playing like a puppy again! (New pictures- check them out) Thank you one and all for all of the pledges and donations, you have helped this little girl to see again! Special thanks to Laurie Rentas (remember "Murphy"?) and all of her effort to make this happen.

**** From TheDogPlace: "Project: Bad Medicine The best disinfectant is sunlight and TheDogPlace offers you the truth. Do it for your dog. The risks and casualties of treatment have multiplied at an astonishing rate in the last decade. Educated owners are less likely to be distraught owners! Don't leave without going to Project: Bad Medicine. Become informed before the next trip to the vet.

Taking your dog to the vet can safe his life - or compromise his health, even end his life. We love dogs and the veterinarians who love them but the sad truth is, all vets do not love animals and all are not equally competent. It is a lucrative profession wherein the patient can't complain and the customer is easily duped.

Compounding the problem, Vets are often misinformed on the drugs they dispense. Many refuse the FDA mandate to provide prescription inserts. Many still give rabies shots near the spinal column. Many are sloppy or overly eager surgeons, knowing they can bury mistakes!" (Many thanks Barbara!)

**** Did you hear about the truck fire last month in the New England states that killed all the puppies? TheDogPlace: "Hunte Corporation mass producer, mass marketer, PUPPY DEATHS" . In checking out their website, the subject of a Breeder Conference and vaccination *failures* was found. "The causes can be put into three main categories: host (dog) related, vaccine related, or human error related."

"Others, of course, will simply trust the experts who - it must be said - tend to treat dog owners like mushrooms: keeping us in the dark and throwing manure at us from time to time."

Leslie Bean: "Thank God you are out there looking out for dogs everywhere. I know I've said this before, but cannot say it too many times - THANK YOU for being who you are and being willing to work so hard to ADVOCATE for THE RIGHT THING. You have saved countless little furry lives, most of whom you will never know and will never know who their savior was."

The story of "Rainbow Bridge": I'm sure we are all aware of it.... have heard the poem.... know what it stands for and have told others about it. Now you can 'watch' it.

Terri Pike has set the traditional story to a flash animation, with music (by Kerry Muzzy) and it is beautiful! Please check it out: Rainbow Bridge (thanks for passing it on Lynnie)
