We never had a dog who stole our towels, played the TV too loudly, or had a noisy fight with his traveling companion. We never had a dog that got drunk and broke up the furniture. So, if your dog can vouch for you, you're welcome, too!!!! " The Management

ALDF: Through the Animal Bill of Rights, we are working to show Congress a groundswell of support for legislation that protects animals and recognizes their rights. Ultimately, we hope the petition will be a bill. In the meantime, the thousands of signatures on this petition send a clear message to our legislators that Americans strongly support legal protection for animals. When animal-related legislation is proposed, Congress will remember the huge number of signatures on the Animal Bill of Rights. With that in mind, they will cast a vote for the animals.

New York: Pet Business Untruthful About Rabies Certificates
If you've adopted a dog from a rescue named, "Hands Helping Paws K-9 Rescue", you should take your dog to a veterinarian for rabies shots. New York's attorney general announced yesterday that the business' owner, Shannon Champine, had given out forged rabies certificates to adopters.

Pet vaccine bill deserves support! "Because many veterinarians have failed to disclose that most core veterinary vaccines protect for seven or more years, pet owners, unaware that their animals don't need multiple yearly vaccinations, have overvaccinated their companions -- taking an unnecessary toll on their finances and animals' health. Rep. Peter Rines of Wiscasset has introduced legislation -- LR883, An Act to Require Veterinarians to Provide Vaccine Disclosure Forms -- to solve this problem" Online Petition (ed note: this was in last newsletter, but is considered important!)
Dr. Wayne Potts of the University of Utah is doing research into hypothyroid, diabetes, and hemolytic anemia (CHF Grant #305). He is trying to figure out how to predict which dogs may be stricken with these devastating autoimmune disorders and how we might catch it early enough to prevent the worst effects.

Malamutes reportedly have a high prevalence of thyroiditis and, to a lesser extent, diabetes and hemolytic anemia. If you have a dog with any of these disorders, please go to http://www.malamutehealth.org/grant305.htm to find out how to get involved. The research doesn't cost anything except, perhaps, postage, and is entirely painless for your dog.

Killer disease returns to stalk dogs - The Chicago Tribune reports that canine distemper is breaking out again despite beliefs that vaccinations had eradicated history's biggest killer of dogs.
Caution regarding testing for lyme disease
CDC and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) have become aware of commercial laboratories that conduct testing for Lyme disease by using assays whose accuracy and clinical usefulness have not been adequately established.
Doggie News: "You may have heard of "PETsHOTEL", a day care facility for dogs and cats operated by PETsMART. There are 18 such hotels located in PETsMART stores across the country. PETsHOTEL is marketed as an upscale daycare facility using photos of dogs romping together in a playpen, making phone calls to their owners, and getting pampered by hotel staff. After the newest PETsHOTEL opened near Austin, Texas, News 8 Austin went there to run a story. They produced a video report which you can view on their website. The video does show dogs playing together, and it does show one dog placing a phone call to its owner, but for the most part it seems the dogs spend most of their time resting in cages."
